Employers Should Prepare for Potential ICE Raids

Rumors have spread throughout Western Massachusetts that some area businesses have been the target of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. It is not surprising that such rumors are spreading, because ICE has posted photos of raids as part of the crackdown on businesses suspected of employing undocumented workers. Plus, ICE is rumored to have been seen in Springfield, Northampton, and Holyoke recently. We have heard from businesses that they are concerned they will be targeted by an ICE raid soon, which could be damaging to their reputation, even if ultimately no violation of immigration laws is found to have occurred.

Employers need to ensure they are in full compliance with all immigration laws regarding employees and be prepared for a potential visit from ICE. Understanding legal rights, as well as “dos and don’ts” when interacting with ICE agents, is of the utmost importance in protecting both employers and their employees from unfair treatment.

If you’d like to learn more about what you can and cannot do during an ICE visit to the workplace, consider signing up for our webinar on March 6 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The registration information can be found here. Among other things, during the webinar, we will discuss identifying a point person, verifying credentials of government agents, denying access to non-public areas, documenting the visit to protect your business, and other important “dos and don’ts.”
