For employers whose employees are required to use or are permitted voluntary use of respiratory protection, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued guidance on handling supply shortages in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. OSHA confirms that its respirator standard continues to apply during the pandemic but explains that some employers may be able to make changes to their work practices to decrease the need for N95 respirators. It also outlines where employers have discretion to use materials that are certified under the standards of other countries or are beyond their manufacturer’s recommended shelf life. Finally, OSHA provides specific priorities for healthcare employers as well as all other employers with regard to respiratory safety.
